European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
