Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
